The Lindisfarne Football Club currently finds itself in a strong position with huge numbers of footballers challenging each other for games. The reality of this situation makes for a strong club but unfortunately also means players will miss games. These players must now challenge themselves by pushing for selection and show their desire to play even though they have found themselves not playing. Opportunities to play will arise through injuries and rotations.
Our first game of the season was against Dodges Ferry down at Shark Park. Apart from an intermittent strong breeze that would come up and sweep across the ground the game was played in very warm weather.
We started the game well and our contested football was excellent. Our Intensity and desire to win the football was good early and this set the scene for the majority of the game. Our on-ballers found good 50/50 ball and feed our runners who inturn ran the line and gave us some good entry into a forward 50.
Our defensive six led well by Michael Vanbeest and Trent Clarke, continually played tight giving their forwards limited opportunities to score. They also attacked when needed especially through Leigh Milbourne who played his role well.
Up forward Henry Pfeiffer finished the day with five goals; Shaun Haberfield’s hands were on and gave us a target to kick to when going forward and Daniel Wignall was a handful with his attack on the ball and run.
The hard work was done by the on-ballers whose work rate was excellent. The rucks either won or made a 50/50 of the ruck contests which allowed our on-ballers an even chance when the ball was in dispute. Brenton Allie, Matt Stone, Simon McCarthy and Brodie Phillips where hard at the ball and ran all day in very hot conditions.
A lapse of concentration in the third quarter was the only major negative to come out of the game; we started to tire in the hot conditions and were beaten to the football. Our decision making also suffered as we tried to take on tacklers when we should have disposed of the ball earlier.
It’s very early into the season but some positive signs came out of the game. We had a very even spread of contributors and stuck at our structures especially in contested situation and the use of first options to our runners was good. We still have a lot of work to do and we have a big game against Brighton this weekend.
A mention should also go out to our younger players who all played good games and showed that they are more than capable in reserves grade football if not higher for the club. Well Done Jimmie Mitchell, Matt Hutchinson, Matt Howell and Jack Anning.
