Round 3 Reserves Report -V- Central Hawks 2012

Our round 3 games was played in what I believe is a one off game at Kempton against the Central Hawks in very windy and wet conditions.

Our starts have not been the best in the first two games and when our captain Andrew ‘Tonguie’ Clarke won the toss and elected to kick to the highway end with the wind, I was hopeful that this trend might be about to end. Unfortunately it still took us a while to get going. Once we warmed up and started to win some contested football we started to take some ascendancy.

The second quarter was more impressive against the wind. Our work ethic kicked up a gear and we started to work into our spaces more often which inturn opened up our own running game.

We went out after the long break and started the second half the way we finished the second quarter, full of run. We had already run our opponents into the ground and we continued to link up and run the lines, giving our forwards some good ball for the rest of the game.

Once again the back six defended and set up attack after attack. Stuart Clark and Trent Clark where solid all game and set up attack either with their decision making or by running the lines.

Through the middle Matt Stone was in and under winning some hard balls. Brodie ‘Bartell’ Phillips knocked up getting possessions and his decision making was great and Josh ‘Squish’ Hobden continually sent us forward.

The forwards were fed some good ball all day by the players up the field and inturn put some good numbers on the scoreboard. The big boys up forward had a good day considering the conditions. Van Beest worked hard, Shaun ‘Ben Rafter’ Haberfield must of have had glue on his hands and Scotty Bester polished off everyone’s hard work with six goals or was that seven. Jack Anning did every thing that was asked of him and was in the right spots on more occasions than not and was rewarded with four goals.

Our structures worked ok, our run was impressive and we had 22 contributers but we still need to work on winning more contested football especially early. We need to keep this win in perspective as the Central Hawks where well underdone and this week we play a tough Claremont outfit that will definitely give us more of a contest.
